What Is a Parallax Distance Calculator?

Stellar parallax is the tiny apparent shift in a nearby star's position against distant background stars, caused by Earth's own motion around the Sun. Astronomers measure this angle twice — six months apart — and use it to calculate exactly how far away the star is, without relying on brightness or any other assumption.

This calculator takes that measured parallax angle and converts it into distance using the same formula that defines the parsec, the standard distance unit used throughout professional astronomy.

How to Read Your Results

Distance (Light-Years)

The most familiar distance unit: how many years it takes light to travel from the star to Earth. This is the headline figure you'll see quoted for most stars.

Distance (Parsecs)

The distance in parsecs, the unit astronomers actually work with directly, since it comes straight from the parallax angle without any conversion factor.

Distance (Astronomical Units)

The distance expressed in AU (1 AU = the average Earth–Sun distance), useful for comparing to distances within our own solar system.

The same distance in raw kilometers, which quickly becomes an enormous number even for our closest stellar neighbors.

Tips for Using Parallax Distance

  • Smaller parallax = farther star. The relationship is a simple inverse: half the angle means double the distance.
  • Parallax only works for relatively nearby stars. Beyond a few thousand light-years, the angle becomes too small to measure reliably even with modern instruments.
  • Check your units carefully. Catalog parallax values are usually in milliarcseconds, not arcseconds — mixing them up gives a distance off by a factor of 1,000.
  • Modern missions like Gaia have measured parallax for over a billion stars, making this the most direct distance-measuring technique in astronomy.
