What Is an Empirical Formula Calculator?

An empirical formula gives the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. This calculator takes each element's mass percent — typically from combustion analysis or other lab data — converts it to moles (treating the percentages as grams in a 100 g sample), and normalizes the results into the smallest possible whole-number subscripts.

This is the exact procedure taught in every introductory chemistry course for turning percent-composition data into a chemical formula.

How to Read Your Results

Empirical Formula

The simplest whole-number formula built from your entered elements and their calculated subscripts, such as CH2O.

Element Moles

The moles of each element per 100 g of sample, calculated as mass percent ÷ atomic mass. These are the raw values before normalization.

Whole-Number Ratio

The final normalized subscripts (each element's moles divided by the smallest mole value, then scaled to whole numbers), shown in the order you entered them.


Real-World Example

A lab sample is found by combustion analysis to be 40.00% carbon, 6.71% hydrogen, and 53.29% oxygen by mass.

Dividing every mole value by the smallest (3.331 mol for carbon) gives a clean 1 : 2 : 1 ratio, so the empirical formula is CH2O — the same simplified formula for glucose, formaldehyde, and acetic acid, which all share this same underlying ratio.


Tips for Accurate Results

  • Use precise mass percentages from combustion or elemental analysis for the most reliable ratios.
  • Watch for percentages under 100% — the missing amount is often oxygen, calculated by difference.
  • If a ratio comes out close to X.5, expect the calculator to double every subscript automatically.
