What Is a Concrete Stair Volume Calculator?
Concrete stairs are made up of two connected shapes: the visible stepped portion, and a base slab (or fill) that supports it. This calculator finds the volume of both parts separately and adds them together, using each step's rise, run and width along with the thickness of the base slab beneath the steps.
Estimating stair volume accurately matters because stairs use far less concrete per square foot of footprint than a flat slab would — treating a staircase as if it were solid from the top step down to the ground wastes a lot of material in your order.

Total Concrete Volume
The full amount of concrete needed for the stepped portion and the base slab combined, in cubic yards — the number to give a ready-mix supplier.
Stepped Portion Volume
The volume of just the visible steps, calculated as a series of triangular wedges (half of a rectangular block with the same rise, run and width for each step).
Base Slab Volume
The volume of the flat support slab beneath the steps, calculated as slab thickness × footprint area (total horizontal run × width).

The base slab beneath the steps ends up being the larger share of the pour, which is typical for shorter staircases with a shallow support slab.
Tips for Pouring Concrete Stairs
- Keep rise and run consistent across every step — building codes typically require uniform rise (usually within 3/8 inch) for safety.
- Compact and grade the sub-base before pouring the support slab to prevent settlement cracking.
- Order slightly more than calculated — running short mid-pour on a stepped form is far more disruptive than on a flat slab.
- Use a rebar or wire mesh reinforcement in both the steps and base slab for outdoor stairs subject to freeze-thaw.
