This calculator converts between milligrams per liter (mg/L) and parts per million (ppm) — two of the most commonly confused units in water testing, chemistry and environmental reporting. It also accounts for solution density, so the conversion stays accurate even outside of plain drinking water.

Water-quality reports, lab results and MSDS sheets mix these units constantly. For nearly all dilute aqueous solutions they're treated as interchangeable, but that shortcut breaks down once a solution gets dense — brine, syrup, or industrial process fluids — which is exactly where this tool's density adjustment matters.

mg/L

The mass of dissolved substance per liter of solution — a volume-based measurement, which is how most lab instruments report results directly.

ppm

The mass of dissolved substance per million mass units of solution — a mass-based measurement. By definition, 1 ppm equals 1 mg of solute per kilogram of solution.

Percent by Weight

Concentration expressed as a percentage, useful for comparing against recipe, dosing or regulatory limits that are given in percent rather than ppm.

A water sample tests at 250 mg/L of total dissolved solids, and the water's density is essentially 1.00 g/mL, typical for fresh water at room temperature.

Because density is 1.00, mg/L and ppm come out numerically identical here — but if the same 250 mg/L reading came from a brine sample at 1.15 g/mL density, the ppm value would drop to roughly 217, since each liter of that denser solution weighs more.


Tips for Converting Concentration Units

  • Assume density 1.00 for tap water, groundwater or wastewater unless you have a lab-measured density.
  • Always use measured density for syrups, brines, oils or industrial solutions — the gap between mg/L and ppm grows with density.
  • ppm and mg/kg are the same thing by definition, which is why density (not volume) is the correct bridge to mg/L.
  • Double-check regulatory limits — some agencies publish limits in mg/L and others in ppm, and treating them as always equal can misstate compliance for dense solutions.
