Absorbed Dose (Gy)
The gray is the SI unit for absorbed dose — the physical energy deposited per kilogram of tissue or material, regardless of biological effect.

Rad is the traditional unit for absorbed dose. One gray equals exactly 100 rad.
Real-World Example
A radiology report states a patient received 2 mSv of equivalent dose from a CT scan, and separately notes the absorbed dose at the scan site was 2 mGy (typical for X-ray/gamma radiation, where the two numerically align).

Tips for Working With Radiation Dose Units
- Don't convert Sv directly to Gy — they're related by a radiation weighting factor that depends on radiation type, not a fixed constant.
- For X-rays and gamma rays, the weighting factor is 1, so Sv and Gy values are numerically the same for that radiation type.
- Annual background radiation exposure is typically around 2–3 mSv (200–300 mrem) worldwide.
