What Is a Sound Pressure Level Calculator?
Sound pressure level (SPL) describes loudness on the decibel scale that audio engineers, acousticians, and hearing-safety standards all use. This calculator converts between raw sound pressure in Pascals and the decibel SPL value, using the internationally standardized reference pressure of 20 micropascals — approximately the quietest sound a healthy human ear can detect.
Because decibels are logarithmic, a plain Pascal reading and its dB equivalent look nothing alike numerically. This tool handles that math both ways: pressure to decibels, and decibels back to pressure.
How to Read Your Results
Sound Pressure Level (dB SPL)
This is the loudness value on the familiar decibel scale, calculated as 20 times the base-10 logarithm of your pressure divided by the reference pressure.
Sound Pressure (Pa)
This is the actual physical pressure variation in the air, in Pascals. It's a linear quantity — twice the dB SPL does not mean twice the Pascals, since the relationship is logarithmic.
Reference Pressure Used
Every SPL calculation needs a reference point. This calculator uses the standard 20 µPa (micropascal) reference, which defines 0 dB as the threshold of hearing at 1 kHz.
Real-World Example
A sound level meter at a concert reads 2 Pa of sound pressure. What is that in decibels?

Using dB = 20 × log10(2 ÷ 0.00002) = 20 × log10(100,000) = 20 × 5 = 100 dB SPL — a level loud enough that hearing protection is recommended for extended exposure.
Tips for Working With Sound Pressure Level
- Remember the logarithmic scale: +6 dB roughly doubles pressure, +20 dB is a 10x increase in pressure.
- SPL is not the same as sound power level (dB SWL), which measures total acoustic energy output rather than pressure at a point.
- Distance matters — sound pressure drops off with distance from the source, so an SPL reading is only valid at the measurement point.
- Sustained exposure above ~85 dB SPL is associated with hearing damage risk according to occupational safety guidelines.
