What Is a Combined Noise Level Calculator?
Decibels (dB) measure sound on a logarithmic scale, so you cannot simply add two readings together to find the combined noise level. This calculator uses the standard sound-energy summation formula — the same approach used in environmental noise studies, workplace noise assessments and construction site monitoring — to correctly combine up to four independent sound sources into a single accurate decibel figure.
Because the decibel scale compresses a huge range of sound pressure into manageable numbers, equal increases in dB represent multiplying increases in actual sound energy. That's why two equally loud machines running together only raise the level by about 3 dB, even though the total sound energy has doubled.
How to Read Your Results
Combined Noise Level
This is the true, correctly summed decibel level of all sources measured together at the same point, calculated by converting each reading back to sound energy, summing the energy, and converting the total back to decibels.
Sources Counted
Shows how many of the fields you filled in were included in the calculation. Blank fields are ignored automatically.
Loudest Single Source
The highest individual reading you entered — useful as a baseline for comparison.
Increase Over Loudest Alone
Shows how many extra decibels the additional sources contribute on top of the loudest source by itself. This number is almost always much smaller than most people expect.
Real-World Example
Imagine two identical air conditioning units, each measured at 75 dB from the same distance, running at the same time.

Even though sound energy exactly doubled, the combined level only rises by about 3 dB — from 75.0 dB to 78.0 dB — not to 150 dB. This is a core property of the logarithmic decibel scale that trips up a lot of noise calculations.
Tips for Combining Sound Levels
- Two equal sources add about +3 dB to a single source's level, never double it.
- A source more than about 10 dB quieter than the loudest one barely changes the combined total.
- Measure all readings at the same location and distance for the combination to be meaningful.
- Use A-weighted (dBA) readings when comparing to occupational or environmental noise limits, since they're adjusted to match human hearing sensitivity.
