What Is a Multi-Dice Sum Probability Calculator?

This calculator finds the exact probability of rolling a specific total with any number of dice of any number of sides, by counting every possible outcome combination rather than estimating or simulating. It uses the same combinatorial method — building the sum distribution one die at a time — that probability textbooks use to derive dice-sum odds.

This exact-counting approach works for standard six-sided dice as well as unusual dice used in tabletop games, like d4, d8, d10, d12 or d20, and for any number of dice rolled together.

How to Read Your Results

Probability of Target Sum

The exact chance of rolling your specified target sum with the given dice, expressed as a percentage.

Favorable Outcomes

The number of distinct dice-roll combinations (counting order — rolling a 2 then a 5 is different from a 5 then a 2) that add up to your target sum.

Total Possible Outcomes

The total number of distinct combinations possible across all dice, equal to sides raised to the power of the number of dice.

Most Likely Sum

The single sum value with the highest probability across the whole distribution, along with its probability.

Possible Sum Range

The minimum and maximum sums achievable — the number of dice (all showing a 1) up to dice × sides (all showing the maximum face).

Real-World Example

Rolling two standard six-sided dice and looking for a sum of 7, the classic case:

MetricValue
Total possible outcomes (6²)36
Favorable outcomes for sum = 76 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1)
Probability6 ÷ 36 ≈ 16.67%

A sum of 7 is the most likely single outcome on two six-sided dice, because more face combinations add up to 7 than to any other total between 2 and 12.

Tips for Understanding Dice Probability

  • Extreme sums are always rarest. The minimum and maximum possible totals only have exactly one way to occur, no matter how many dice you roll.
  • More dice means a smoother, more predictable distribution — the sum of many dice clusters tightly around the statistical average.
  • Board games like Settlers of Catan lean on this math. Two-dice sums make 7 the most-rolled number, which is why many games treat it as a special event.
  • Non-standard dice (d10, d20) spread probability evenly per die but still combine into the same middle-heavy pattern once you roll more than one together.
