What Is a Fuel Tank Sounding Volume Calculator?

A sounding is a direct measurement of fuel height inside a tank, usually taken with a dipstick or sounding tube. This calculator converts that height reading into an actual volume in gallons, for either rectangular tanks (simple box shape) or horizontal cylindrical tanks (common for portable and built-in round fuel tanks).

For a cylindrical tank, volume isn't a straight-line function of height — the tank is widest through the middle and narrowest near the top and bottom — so this tool uses the correct circular-segment geometry rather than a simple linear approximation.

Tips for Accurate Soundings

  • Keep the boat level when sounding — trim or heel will skew the reading, especially in cylindrical tanks.
  • Use interior dimensions, not the outside case size, for an accurate volume.
  • Wipe the dipstick clean between soundings and read at the wet line, not a splash mark.
  • Cross-check against known fill-ups — if you just filled a known number of gallons, compare that to the calculator's percent-full reading to validate your dimensions.
