How to calculate right triangle angle

Find an acute angle in a right triangle when the opposite and adjacent side lengths are known.

How the calculation works

The tangent of the angle equals opposite ÷ adjacent. Applying inverse tangent and converting radians to degrees gives the angle.

Example

An opposite side of 6 and adjacent side of 8 produce an angle of approximately 36.87°.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the hypotenuse used?

It is not needed when both opposite and adjacent sides are known.

Pro Tips for Right Triangle Angle

  1. Use side lengths measured from the same angle.
  2. The two sides may use any unit as long as both use the same one.

Common Right Triangle Angle Mistakes to Avoid

  • Swapping opposite and adjacent returns the complementary angle rather than the intended angle.
