What Is a Guitar Fret Position Calculator?

Every fret on a modern guitar, bass, mandolin or banjo is placed using the same mathematics: 12-tone equal temperament. This calculator finds the exact distance from the nut to any fret, given your instrument's scale length, using the formula luthiers use to lay out a fretboard by hand or with a fret-slotting jig.

It's useful for anyone building or repairing a fretted instrument, checking whether a fretboard is intonated correctly, or simply curious why frets get closer together as they approach the body.

How to Read Your Results

Distance From Nut

How far the fret sits from the nut, measured along the string — this is the number you'd mark on a fretboard blank when building or refretting an instrument.

Distance From Bridge

The remaining vibrating string length past that fret. This value directly determines the pitch: shorter remaining length means a higher-pitched fretted note.

Spacing From Previous Fret

The physical gap between the entered fret and the one before it — frets are widest apart near the nut and get progressively closer together near the body, since each one is a fixed frequency ratio rather than a fixed distance.

A standard Fender-style electric guitar with a 25.5" scale length:

Fret 12 lands at exactly half the 25.5" scale length (12.75") — a useful check when building or verifying a fretboard, since this holds true for every equal-temperament instrument regardless of scale length.


Tips for Fret Layout

  • Measure scale length carefully — from the nut to the exact center of the 12th fret, then double it, or use the manufacturer's published spec.
  • Cumulative error compounds if you measure fret-to-fret with a ruler — always measure from the nut for each fret individually, as this calculator does.
  • Multi-scale (fanned-fret) instruments use a different scale length for each string and require separate calculations per string.
  • A fret-slotting template or CNC file should always be double-checked against this formula before cutting.
