What Is a Typing Speed Calculator?

This calculator converts a raw typing test — characters typed, time taken and errors made — into words per minute (WPM) and accuracy, using the same conventions as most online typing tests.

Typing tests standardize a "word" as 5 characters (including spaces), so results are comparable across different texts regardless of average word length.

How to Read Your Results

Net WPM

Net WPM is your real, usable typing speed: gross speed minus a penalty for every uncorrected error. This is the number most typing certifications and job screenings care about.

Gross WPM

Gross WPM measures raw speed only, without any accuracy penalty. It's useful for tracking how fast you can physically type, separate from mistakes.

Accuracy

The percentage of characters typed correctly. High speed with low accuracy usually means slowing down slightly will actually raise your net WPM.

Real-World Example

Typing 250 characters in 60 seconds with 3 uncorrected errors:

MetricResult
Gross WPM50.0
Net WPM47.0
Accuracy98.8%

The average typist scores around 40 WPM; 60-70 WPM is considered fast, and above 90 WPM is typically reserved for transcriptionists and competitive typists.

Tips for Improving Typing Speed

  • Prioritize accuracy first. Errors cost more net WPM than typing slightly slower.
  • Use all ten fingers and avoid looking at the keyboard.
  • Practice in short, frequent sessions rather than long infrequent ones.
  • Re-test regularly with the same passage length to track real progress.
