What Is an Aquarium Water Volume Calculator?
This calculator converts your tank's physical dimensions into actual water volume in gallons and liters. It supports both rectangular tanks (the most common shape) and cylindrical or round-bowl tanks, and lets you account for the fact that tanks are rarely filled completely to the rim.
Knowing your real water volume matters for dosing medications and water conditioners correctly, sizing a filter or heater, and applying stocking guidelines like the 1-inch-per-gallon rule accurately.
How to Read Your Results
Actual Water Volume
Your tank's volume at the fill percentage you entered — this is the number to use for dosing and stocking calculations.
Full Tank Capacity
The tank's total volume if filled completely to the rim, before any fill-percentage adjustment.
Water Volume (Liters)
The same actual water volume converted to liters, useful if your medication, fertilizer or conditioner dosing is labeled in metric units.
Real-World Example
A standard 20-gallon-long style rectangular tank measuring 24 in. × 12 in. × 16 in., filled to 90%:
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Volume in cubic inches | 24 × 12 × 16 | 4,608 in³ |
| Full capacity in gallons | 4,608 ÷ 231 | ≈19.9 gal |
| Actual water volume (90% fill) | 19.9 × 0.90 | ≈17.9 gal |
Even though it's labeled a "20-gallon" tank, the real working water volume at a typical fill level is closer to 17.9 gallons — worth knowing before dosing medication by the gallon.
Tips for Accurate Volume Measurements
- Measure inside the glass, not the outer frame, for the most accurate reading.
- Subtract for substrate and decor if you need a precise figure for dosing — gravel, rock and driftwood can displace several gallons in a heavily decorated tank.
- Use the fill percentage field to match your real water line, since most tanks are filled to about 85–95% of their rim height to leave room for the hood and prevent splashing.
- Bowfront and irregularly shaped tanks need manufacturer specs for an exact volume — this calculator's shapes are estimates for standard rectangular and round tanks.
