What Is a Dog Daily Food Portion Calculator?

This calculator estimates how many calories your dog needs each day and converts that into cups of food, using the same Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula referenced in veterinary nutrition guidelines. It accounts for your dog's weight and life stage, then divides the calorie target by your specific food's calorie density so the portion is tailored to what's actually in the bowl.

Feeding guides printed on dog food bags are often generic ranges. This calculator gives you a starting point based on your dog's actual weight and life stage, which you can then fine-tune by monitoring body condition over a few weeks.

How to Read Your Results

Daily Food Amount

The estimated number of cups of your specific food to feed per day, based on its calorie density and your dog's calculated energy needs.

Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

The baseline calories your dog would burn at complete rest — the foundation the rest of the calculation builds on.

Daily Energy Requirement (DER)

RER multiplied by a life-stage/activity factor, giving the realistic total calories your dog needs given their activity level, age and reproductive status.

Per Meal

The daily amount divided into two meals, the most common feeding schedule for adult dogs (puppies typically need 3–4 smaller meals).

Real-World Example

A 40 lb neutered adult dog with average activity is fed a food containing 350 kcal per cup.

StepCalculationResult
Weight in kg40 × 0.4536≈18.14 kg
RER70 × 18.14^0.75≈613 kcal/day
DER (factor 1.6)613 × 1.6≈981 kcal/day
Daily food amount981 ÷ 350≈2.80 cups/day

That works out to roughly 1.4 cups per meal, twice a day — a useful starting point to weigh out and adjust based on your dog's body condition over the following weeks.

Tips for Feeding Your Dog

  • Weigh your dog regularly. Portions should scale with actual current weight, not a guess.
  • Check body condition monthly. You should be able to feel (but not see) the ribs; adjust portions up or down by about 10% if not.
  • Treats count toward the daily total. Keep treats to under 10% of daily calories and adjust the meal portion accordingly.
  • Switch foods gradually over 5–7 days when changing brands, mixing old and new food to avoid digestive upset.
