What Is a Hyperfocal Distance Calculator?

The hyperfocal distance is the closest focusing distance that still keeps infinity within your depth of field. Focus any closer than this and infinity starts to blur; focus exactly here (or use it as your focus point instead of the horizon) and you maximize the amount of the scene that's acceptably sharp, from roughly half the hyperfocal distance all the way to the horizon.

This calculator uses your lens's focal length, chosen aperture and sensor size to compute the hyperfocal distance using the same circle-of-confusion formula found in printed and app-based DOF tables.

How to Read Your Results

Hyperfocal Distance

The distance to manually focus at (in feet). Anything beyond this is treated as infinity for sharpness purposes.

Near Limit When Focused Here

When you focus exactly at the hyperfocal distance, this is the closest point that stays acceptably sharp — always exactly half the hyperfocal distance.

Far Limit

Focusing at the hyperfocal distance extends acceptable sharpness all the way to infinity, which is the whole point of the technique.

Wider lenses and smaller apertures (higher f-numbers) both pull the hyperfocal distance much closer to the camera, making it easier to keep an entire landscape sharp in one frame.


Tips for Using Hyperfocal Distance

  • Wide-angle lenses have much shorter hyperfocal distances than telephoto lenses at the same aperture.
  • Use manual focus and either a distance scale or a tape measure to focus precisely at the hyperfocal distance.
  • Narrower apertures shorten the hyperfocal distance but reduce the light reaching your sensor — balance with shutter speed or ISO.
  • This technique is most useful for landscapes where both foreground and background need to be sharp.
