What Is a SWOLF Score Calculator?

SWOLF (a blend of "swim" and "golf") is a widely used swim-efficiency metric popularized by swim coaches and now built into most swim watches, including Garmin and Apple Watch. It combines how long a length takes with how many strokes it takes to swim it, giving one simple number where — like golf — lower is better.

This calculator takes your lap time and stroke count for a single pool length and computes your SWOLF score using the same formula built into wearable swim trackers.

How to Read Your Results

SWOLF Score

The sum of your lap time in seconds and your stroke count for that length. There's no universal "good" number — it depends on pool length, stroke and the individual swimmer — so the real value comes from tracking your own SWOLF over weeks and months in the same pool.

Lap Time (Seconds)

Your entered minutes and seconds converted into total seconds, the time component of the formula.

Strokes Counted

The number of strokes you took to complete the length, counted as one hand entering the water per stroke (the convention most swim watches use).

Real-World Example

A swimmer completes a 25-yard length in 35 seconds using 18 strokes.

ValueResult
Lap time35.0 seconds
Strokes18
SWOLF score35 + 18 = 53

If that same swimmer later covers the same 25 yards in 33 seconds with 17 strokes, their SWOLF drops to 50 — a lower score showing improved efficiency, even without a dramatic change in speed.

Tips for Using This Calculator

  • Keep pool length and stroke consistent between sessions so your SWOLF trend is a fair comparison.
  • A lower SWOLF is better, but don't chase it at the expense of speed — the goal is fewer strokes and/or less time, not stroke count alone.
  • Freestyle SWOLF isn't directly comparable to breaststroke or butterfly SWOLF — different strokes naturally produce different scores.
  • Warm up before testing — a cold first length will usually produce a worse SWOLF than your true efficiency.

Note: SWOLF is a relative efficiency metric, not an absolute performance standard. Scores are only meaningful when compared under consistent conditions — same pool length, same stroke, same swimmer.
