What Is a Butt Weld Bevel Angle Calculator?

Groove welds on thicker plate need beveled edges so the electrode or wire can reach the full depth of the joint and fuse it completely. This calculator gives you the typical total included angle for a single-V or double-V groove weld based on your welding process, plus the per-plate angle you actually cut or set on a bevel gauge.

These are commonly used prequalified-style starting values, similar in spirit to the joint guidance found in AWS D1.1 — always confirm the exact angle, root opening and root face against your project's qualified welding procedure specification (WPS).

How to Read Your Results

Total Included Angle

This is the full angle of the V-shaped groove as measured across the joint, the number typically called out on a welding symbol or drawing.

Per-Plate Bevel Angle

Since most grooves are cut symmetrically, each plate edge is beveled at half the total included angle. This is the number you'd dial into a beveling machine or bevel gauge for one edge.

Grooves Required

A single-V groove needs one bevel pass per plate edge; a double-V needs bevels on both the top and bottom of the joint, usually meeting at a root face near mid-thickness.


Real-World Example

A fabricator is welding 3/4-inch plate with FCAW (flux-cored arc welding) and decides a double-V groove is more economical than a single-V at this thickness.

The machinist sets the beveler to 32.5° and cuts both the top and bottom edges, leaving a root face near the middle of the plate — roughly halving the weld metal volume compared with a single-V groove at the same angle.


Tips for Groove Preparation

  • Use a double-V on thicker plate to cut weld metal volume, heat input and distortion roughly in half versus a single-V.
  • Narrower angles save filler metal but require more precise, usually mechanized, arc control to avoid incomplete fusion.
  • Leave an appropriate root face and root opening — this calculator covers angle only, not root dimensions, which also depend on process and code.
  • Recheck fit-up after cutting; bevel angle, root gap and root face all interact to control penetration and burn-through risk.
