What Is a Welding Cost Per Foot Calculator?
This calculator adds up the three main costs behind every foot of weld: labor (your rate times how long that foot actually takes to run), filler metal consumed, and shielding gas used. The result is a real per-foot price you can use to quote jobs or check your shop's profitability.

How to Read Your Results
Cost Per Foot of Weld
The full cost — labor plus filler metal plus gas — to produce one foot of finished weld at your entered rates.
Labor Cost Per Foot
Just the labor portion: your hourly rate converted to a per-minute rate, multiplied by the minutes it takes to weld one foot. This is usually the largest single cost.
Consumables Cost Per Foot
Filler metal and shielding gas combined, per foot — the material cost independent of how long the weld takes.
Total Job Cost
Cost per foot multiplied by your total weld length, giving the full estimated cost for the entire job.
Real-World Example
A welder earning $45/hour takes 2 minutes to run one foot of weld, using $0.35 of filler metal and $0.15 of shielding gas per foot, on a 20-foot job:

Tips for Estimating Weld Costs
- Time real passes, not textbook rates. Actual travel speed varies by position, joint type and welder skill.
- Add a markup on top of raw cost per foot to cover overhead, equipment depreciation and profit.
- Track filler metal by weight, not guesswork — weigh a spool or rod box before and after a known length of weld.
- Don't forget gas waste from purge time and leaks; actual consumption often runs higher than the theoretical flow rate.
