What Is a Stair Riser Count Calculator?

Designing a safe, comfortable staircase starts with dividing the total vertical rise into a whole number of equal risers. This calculator takes your total rise and a target riser height, finds the nearest whole number of risers, and calculates the actual riser height that results — since risers can't be fractional, this final adjusted number is what you'll actually build to.

It also converts your total horizontal run into the resulting tread depth, and shows a quick "2×riser + run" comfort check, a long-standing rule of thumb (often called the rule of 17 to 18) used to judge whether a stair's proportions feel comfortable to climb.

How to Read Your Results

Number of Risers Needed

The whole number of risers that most closely divides your total rise into steps near your target height.

Actual Riser Height

The true, final riser height once the total rise is split evenly across that whole number of risers — this may differ slightly from your original target, and it's the number you should use for every step.

Number of Treads

A straight staircase always has one fewer tread than it has risers, since the top landing itself serves as the final "step."

Tread Run (Depth)

The horizontal depth of each tread, found by dividing your total available run by the number of treads.

Comfort Check

Twice the riser height plus the tread run. Many stair designers target roughly 24–25 inches here as a traditional guideline for a comfortable stride, though your local code's specific riser and tread limits always take precedence.


Real-World Example

A staircase with 108 inches of total rise, a 7.25-inch target riser height, and 132 inches of available run:

108 ÷ 7.25 rounds to 15 risers, which brings the true riser height down slightly to 7.2 inches — well within the comfortable range, and close to the traditional 24–25 inch comfort guideline.


Tips for Safe Stair Layout

  • Check your local building code for the maximum allowed riser height and minimum tread depth before finalizing a design — these limits vary by jurisdiction.
  • Keep every riser height identical to within about 3/16 inch — uneven risers are one of the most common causes of stair falls.
  • Double-check your total rise on site with an actual measurement, since finished floor heights can differ from plans.
  • Leave headroom clearance in mind, especially on stairs with a landing or a run under existing framing.
