What Is a Wood Movement Gap Allowance Calculator?
Solid wood expands and contracts across the grain as it absorbs and releases moisture with the seasons. This calculator estimates how much a panel of a given width will move between two moisture content levels, and recommends a gap allowance so frame-and-panel doors, breadboard ends and tabletops have room to move without cracking, buckling or blowing out a joint.
It uses the standard woodworker's approximation: movement is roughly linear with width and with the change in moisture content, scaled by a movement coefficient that depends on the species and how the board was cut from the log.
How to Read Your Results
Recommended Gap Allowance
The total clearance to leave for the panel to move freely, including a small safety buffer on top of the calculated movement. Use this to size panel grooves, breadboard end mortises or slotted screw holes.
Expected Movement
The estimated total dimensional change across the grain between your low and high moisture content values, with no safety margin added.
Movement Per Side
Half of the expected movement — useful when a panel is centered in a frame and can grow or shrink equally on both edges.
Coefficient Used
The movement coefficient applied, adjusted for flatsawn vs. quartersawn cut. Quartersawn lumber is roughly twice as stable across its width as flatsawn lumber from the same species.

A 12-inch-wide flatsawn walnut panel (medium movement class) moving from 6% moisture content in a heated winter home to 12% in a humid summer:

A groove or gap of roughly 1/4 inch gives that panel room to swell in summer and shrink in winter without splitting the frame or leaving an unsightly gap.
Tips for Managing Wood Movement
- Never glue a panel rigidly into a frame across its width — let it float in a groove instead.
- Quartersawn stock moves less and is more dimensionally stable for wide glue-ups.
- Acclimate lumber in your shop for at least a week (longer for thick stock) before final milling.
- Finish all faces of a panel evenly to slow moisture exchange and reduce cupping.
