Tips for Drilling Pilot Holes

  • When in doubt, size up in hardwood and size down slightly in softwood — splitting is the bigger risk in dense species.
  • Drill near board ends or edges with a hardwood-sized hole even in softwood, since end grain splits more easily.
  • Countersink separately if you want a flush or recessed screw head; the pilot hole diameter here is for the shank/thread only.
  • Self-tapping and specialty screws (deck screws, drywall screws) may have different thread geometry than a standard wood screw — check the manufacturer's guidance for those.
