What Is a Concrete Air Entrainment Calculator?

Air entrainment is the practice of deliberately mixing microscopic, evenly distributed air bubbles into concrete using an admixture. Those bubbles give freezing water inside the concrete somewhere to go as it expands, which is what keeps slabs, driveways and pavements from cracking apart after repeated freeze-thaw cycles. This calculator finds the target entrained air volume for a batch based on the nominal maximum aggregate size and the exposure class of the finished concrete, following the same exposure-class targets used in ACI 211.1 mix design tables.

Getting the target air content right matters in both directions: too little air and the concrete is vulnerable to freeze-thaw scaling and deicer damage; too much air and compressive strength drops, since every extra percent of air is roughly a few percent of strength given up.

How to Read Your Results

Entrained Air Volume Needed

This is the actual volume of air, in cubic feet, that the batch should contain once air entrainment is working correctly — the number a concrete tester compares against a pressure-meter or roll-a-meter reading on site.

Target Air Content

This is the percentage figure looked up from the exposure-class table for your selected aggregate size. It's the number typically written into a mix design or specification sheet.

Air Volume (Cubic Yards)

The same air volume expressed in cubic yards, useful when comparing against a full truck-batch specification sheet that is usually written per cubic yard.

Solids/Paste Volume Remaining

This is the batch volume left over for cement paste and aggregate once the target air volume is accounted for — a useful check when back-calculating a full mix design.

Tips for Air-Entrained Concrete

  • Smaller aggregate needs more air — the target percentage rises as nominal maximum aggregate size drops.
  • Always field-test fresh concrete with a pressure meter; admixture dosage alone doesn't guarantee the target is hit.
  • Every 1% of extra entrained air typically reduces compressive strength by roughly 2–6%, so overshooting the target has real costs.
  • Severe exposure classes (deicing salts plus freeze-thaw) need noticeably more air than mild, indoor-only exposure.
