What Is a Beer IBU Bitterness Calculator?
International Bitterness Units (IBU) measure how much bittering compound from hops ends up dissolved in your finished beer. This calculator uses Glenn Tinseth's hop utilization formula — the standard model behind most brewing software — to estimate the IBU contribution of a single hop addition from its weight, alpha acid percentage, boil time, wort gravity and batch volume.
Because utilization changes with both boil time and wort density, the same hop addition can produce very different bitterness depending on when it's added and how strong the wort is — this calculator makes that relationship explicit instead of relying on a flat rule of thumb.
How to Read Your Results
Estimated IBU
This is the calculated bitterness contribution of the single hop addition you entered. For a multi-addition boil, run the calculator once per addition and add the results together.
Hop Utilization
This is the percentage of the alpha acid in your hops that actually converts into dissolved bitterness during the boil. It rises with longer boil times and falls in higher-gravity worts.
BU:GU Ratio
Bitterness units to gravity units is a quick way to judge a beer's overall balance — roughly 0.3–0.5 reads as malty, 0.5–0.8 as balanced, and above 0.8 as distinctly hoppy or bitter-forward, though it varies by style.

A classic pale ale hop addition: 28g (1 oz) of 5.5% alpha acid hops boiled for 60 minutes in 19L (5 gal) of 1.050 SG wort.

Adding the same hops for only the last 10 minutes of the boil, instead of a full 60, would drop the estimated IBU to roughly a third of that value — most of the bitterness contribution comes from longer boil times.
Tips for Hop Bitterness
- Check alpha acid % on the actual package — it varies by hop crop and can differ significantly from a printed catalog average.
- Late and whirlpool additions contribute little bitterness but a lot of aroma — don't count on them for IBU targets.
- Higher-gravity beers need more hops for the same perceived bitterness, since utilization drops as gravity rises.
- Hop pellets vs. whole cones can shift utilization slightly; this calculator assumes standard pellet-hop behavior.
