What Is a Mash Efficiency Calculator?
Mash (or brewhouse) efficiency measures what percentage of the sugar theoretically available in your grain actually ended up in your fermenter. This calculator compares the extract you actually achieved — from your measured gravity and batch volume — against the maximum possible extract your grain bill could provide, using each grain's potential points per pound per gallon (PPG).
Tracking this number batch to batch is one of the most useful things an all-grain brewer can do: it turns "my beer came out weaker than planned" into a specific, measurable number you can troubleshoot and improve.
How to Read Your Results
Mash Efficiency
Your overall efficiency percentage. Most home all-grain systems land somewhere between 65% and 80%; well-optimized systems can reach 85%+.
Actual Extract Points
The gravity points you actually collected, scaled by your batch volume — this is the "what you got" side of the comparison.
Maximum Possible Points
The theoretical ceiling based on your grain weight and its potential extract — this is the "what was available" side.
Actual PPG Achieved
Your actual extract points per pound of grain used, useful for comparing directly against your grain's rated potential.

Tips for Improving Mash Efficiency
- Crush grain finer (without producing excessive flour) to expose more starch to enzymatic conversion.
- Hold mash temperature in the target range (typically 148–158°F / 64–70°C) for the full rest time.
- Sparge thoroughly — a slow, even rinse extracts more sugar than a fast dump-and-drain.
- Recalculate recipes using your own measured efficiency rather than a generic assumed number for more predictable results.
