How to calculate asphalt
Multiply the paved area by the compacted thickness to find volume. Multiply that volume by compacted asphalt density, then convert pounds to tons. Add a waste allowance before ordering.
Example
A 75 ft × 12 ft driveway paved 3 inches thick contains 225 cubic feet. At 145 lb per cubic foot, it requires about 16.31 tons before waste, or about 17.13 tons with 5% waste.
Planning tips
Confirm the required pavement section, mix design and density with your paving contractor or asphalt supplier. Base preparation and compaction are critical and are not included in the material estimate.
