What Is a Frame Count & Runtime Calculator?

Video is really just a sequence of still images played back fast enough that motion looks continuous. This calculator takes a clip's duration — minutes and seconds — and its frame rate, and tells you exactly how many individual frames that adds up to. It also shows you what the same number of frames would look like as a runtime at other common frame rates.

This is useful when you're planning storage, exporting an image sequence, matching footage shot at different frame rates, or just double-checking a render's numbers before you commit to a long export.

How to Read Your Results

Total Frames

This is the headline number: your entered duration converted to seconds, multiplied by your selected frame rate, and rounded to the nearest whole frame. It's the same count you'd see on an editing timeline's frame counter at the very end of the clip.

Frame Rate Comparison Table

Frame count is a fixed number of images, but "runtime" depends on the frame rate used to play them back. The table below takes your calculated total frame count and shows how long that same stack of frames would run at each of the other standard frame rates — useful for spotting how much a project would speed up or slow down if it were conformed to a different rate.


Real-World Example

Say you have a 60-minute (3,600-second) video authored at 24fps. That's 86,400 frames exactly (3,600 × 24). Now imagine those same 86,400 frames get played back — or misinterpreted — at 23.976fps instead of 24fps, which happens more often than editors would like when footage is mixed between "true" 24 and NTSC-pulled-down 23.976.

Playing the same 86,400 frames at 23.976fps instead of 24fps takes 3,603.6 seconds — about 3.6 seconds longer than the original 60:00 runtime. It sounds tiny, but that same fractional drift is exactly why mismatched frame rates cause audio sync to slip further and further out over a long program, and why broadcast and post-production workflows are so strict about locking a frame rate before editing begins.


Tips for Using Frame Counts

  • Match your frame rate to your delivery platform. YouTube, streaming platforms and most modern cameras default to 24, 25, 30 or 60fps depending on region and content type.
  • NTSC-legacy rates like 29.97fps still show up constantly in US broadcast and cable workflows, even though almost nothing is actually analog NTSC anymore.
  • Higher frame rates need proportionally more storage and processing. A 60fps clip has roughly twice the frames — and roughly twice the render and storage demand — of the same-length clip at 30fps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 29.97fps and 30fps?

29.97fps is the NTSC broadcast standard, defined exactly as 30 × 1000/1001 frames per second — very slightly slower than a "true" 30fps. It exists for historical reasons tied to how color was added to the original black-and-white NTSC television signal. The two rates are close enough to look identical, but far enough apart that mixing them in the same timeline causes audio drift over time.

Which frame rate should I use for YouTube?

Match whatever your camera recorded at — YouTube supports 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60fps (plus their .97/.94 NTSC variants) and will play back at your source rate without forcing a conversion. If you're shooting new footage specifically for YouTube with no other delivery requirement, 30fps or 60fps are the safest, most broadly compatible choices.

Why do frame rates have decimals, like 23.976?

These decimal rates trace back to the NTSC color television standard, which nudged the original 24, 30 and 60fps rates down by a factor of 1000/1001 to avoid interference between the color and audio signals. The result is odd-looking numbers like 23.976, 29.97 and 59.94 that are still used today for compatibility with that broadcast history.
