What Is a Router Bit Speed Calculator?
Router bit manufacturers publish speed charts because a bit's safe RPM depends heavily on its diameter — a small straight bit and a large panel-raising bit shouldn't spin at the same speed. This calculator applies the same constant-surface-speed principle behind those charts: as diameter goes up, recommended RPM comes down, following an inverse relationship.
It's meant as a general planning guideline for variable-speed routers, not a replacement for the specific RPM rating printed on your bit or its packaging.

A general upper-limit router speed for the bit diameter you entered, rounded to the nearest common router speed setting.
Estimated Cutting-Edge Speed
Roughly how fast the bit's outer cutting edge is moving through the material at the recommended RPM, in feet per minute — this is what stays in a safer range as diameter changes.
Router's Rated Maximum
The maximum speed you entered for your specific router. The recommendation will never exceed this value.
Capped by Router Limit?
Shows whether the diameter-based recommendation was already below your router's maximum, or whether your router's top speed became the limiting factor instead.
Real-World Example
Comparing a small 1/4-inch straight bit to a large 3-inch panel-raising bit on a router with a 24,000 RPM maximum:

Tips for Safe Router Speeds
- Always start large bits at their lowest safe speed and make multiple shallow passes rather than one deep cut.
- Check the bit's stamped RPM rating — many large-diameter bits list a hard maximum you should never exceed.
- Reduce speed further in a router table for feather-boarded, climb-cut, or figured/interlocked-grain wood.
- Let the router come to a complete stop before setting it down or changing bits.
