What Is a Saw Kerf Material Loss Calculator?

Every time a saw blade passes through a board, it removes a thin strip of material equal to its kerf width — and that strip is gone for good. This calculator adds up the total kerf loss across every cut in your project and tells you the real total stock length you need to buy, not just the sum of your finished piece lengths.

It's especially useful for cut lists with many short pieces, like drawer parts, moldings, or shop jigs, where kerf loss can add several extra inches — or a whole extra board — to your material list.

How to Read Your Results

Total Stock Length Required

The true amount of raw stock length needed: your finished piece lengths plus the material lost to the saw blade on every cut.

Sum of Finished Piece Lengths

The simple total of all your finished parts, with no kerf loss included — this is what a naive cut-list estimate would give you.

Total Kerf Loss

The extra length consumed purely by the saw blade itself, based on your kerf width and the number of cuts.

Boards Needed

How many boards of your specified stock length you'll need to buy to cover the total required length, rounded up to a whole board.


Real-World Example

Cutting 12 drawer parts, each 18 inches long, from 8-foot (96-inch) boards, using a standard 1/8-inch (0.125 in) kerf blade:

Tips for Minimizing Kerf Loss

  • Switch to a thin-kerf blade on projects with many short, repetitive cuts to shave material loss.
  • Batch identical-length cuts with a stop block to reduce wasted setup cuts.
  • Plan your cut order so offcuts from one part can become a smaller part later in the list.
  • Buy a little extra length beyond the bare minimum to allow for squaring the first end and any defects.
